Dāḍ khaṭūke to kākaro / दाड़ खटूके तो काकरौ

दाड़ खटूके तो काकरौ,
ओर जी खटूकेज नेण।
गयो खटूके बालमो,
कयो खटूके बेण।

“जैसे दाँत में कंकड़ लगे तो चुभ जाता है,
जैसे आँख में धूल जाए तो परेशान करती है,
ऐसे ही जब प्रिय दूर जाता है तो दिल में टीस उठती है,
और कुछ दुख या बात ऐसी लगती है जैसे दिल में तीर चुभ गया हो।”

 

Dāḍ khaṭūke to kākaro,
Or jī khaṭūkej neṇ.
Gayo khaṭūke bālmo,
Kayo khaṭūke beṇ (bāṇ).

“Just as a tiny pebble pricks the tooth,
just as even a bit of dust irritates the eye,
so does the heart ache when the beloved goes away,
and certain words or pains strike like an arrow in the heart.”
